Description:

The Best Friend Cribbing Muzzle allows horses to eat and drink freely while gently and humanely limiting the damage from a number of undesirable equine behaviors, including: - Cribbing and/or wood-chewing - Chewing blankets, bandages or wounds - Chewing other objects - Biting other ponies - Biting themselves - Biting people The nylon and aluminum construction is lightweight, rustproof, rot-proof and easy-to-clean. The Best Friend Cribbing Muzzle is padded for comfort and attaches to your breakaway halter with a four-point breakaway system that enhances safety. The muzzle should be positioned so that the bars run vertically (north and south). To attach the muzzle, loop the four straps over the noseband and chinstrap. (The two side straps may be looped through the halter rings for added stability.) Leave the metal rings in the down position to allow the muzzle to breakaway. The breakaway system will hold in place under normal circumstances, yet will pull apart if a pony panics and struggles to free itself. This feature greatly reduces the risk of injury to the pony. To disable the breakaway feature, slide the metal rings up over the hook-and-loop straps. Fitting Instructions: Measure up the muzzle depth on your horse and check the circumference at that point. The muzzle should not fit tight but should have a few fingers space between the muzzle and horse Sizing: Pony Most average size ponies and yearlings, very small faced horses, 300-500 lbs. 12 hands and under 20" circumference x 4 1/2" depth Cob Large ponies or small horses, such as Morgans or Arabians, 500-800 lbs, 13-14 hands 22" circumference x 5 1/2" depth Horse (Average) Average Size horses, such as Quarter Horses, 800-1100 lbs, 15-16 hands 24" circumference x 6" depth Large Horse (Oversize) Warmbloods and large faced horses, 1,100 to 1,600 lbs., 17 hands and over 26" circumference x 6 1/2" depth

5review of grazing muzzleSep 04, 2009
By Diane
We have 2 horses that started eating the bark off the trees in their pasture last winter. We tried increasing their mineral intake, increasing amount of grass hay, spraying the trees with deer stop and tobasco sauce, rubbed the tree bark with irish spring soap (one horse wanted to eat what was left of the bar of soap) and even got them a ball to play with. Nothing worked. Everyone told us not to bother with a grazing muzzle because the straps break all the time and it's not worth it. So we didn't try it until later but it worked. They can still eat and drink, and not one strap has broken yet, and one horse has been wearing it during his pasture time (745am-11pm) since February. The other horse stopped eating trees in May. We now have to stall him at night in the nice weather just so we can take it off and give his head and neck a break for 8 hours. It's not very heavy but I feel so sorry for him, but he won't stop stripping the bark off the trees. Two things to watch out for are that the aluminum bars wear thin and will break and leave sharp edges after about 6 months, so you need to check the bottom routinely and replace it about every 6 months. Also, it gets wet in the water trough and the germs and continued wetness creates a really foul smelling muzzle after a while, so you need to occasionally take it in and scrub it and put it in a very diluted bleach wash to kill the germs, then rinse well. Also check your horse's teeth after a while as their teeth is what wears the aluminum bars down. Our horses are 10 and 23 years old and it surprisingly hasn't damaged their teeth. It's been the only thing that has saved our trees and I strongly recommend it even though it needs to be replaced every 6-7 months. It's either this, or let them kill 100 trees or move.

4Great product, watch for wear and tearDec 29, 2010

I tried everything to stop my horse from cribbing and this is the only product that worked. It is lightweight and allows my horse to eat and drink without any issue. Yes, it makes your horse look intimidating, but I rather have a Hannibal Lecter look-alike in my paddock than a cribber. It does get very dirty given the nature of being worn 24/7 and being between the horse and all food. I have two break-away halters with a muzzle attached to each so one can be on the horse and then another available for switching out for cleaning, etc. I suggest also getting the Muzzle Mate pads to prevent rubbing, particularly on the face and chin. Watch out for wear and tear... my horse wore down the aluminum until the bars actually snapped off. But my vet said she has seen horses mangle these things up beyond recognition and to expect to go through several a year. I am happy with this product.

1Needs to be better constructedJan 16, 2011

A good idea, but didn't actually stand up to use (and abuse) by my horse. Obviously horses are not going to like something on their muzzle and work to pull it off, which he did - many times. I understand the need for this to be "breakaway" but the stitching for the straps holding it to the halter snapped before the velcro let loose... If the halter is supposed to be the "breakaway" feature, then you don't need the muzzle to also be IMHO. Needless to say it lasted maybe one week and then was held to the halter by zip ties for another couple at most. To me, this was a complete waste of money.

3needs replacement aluminum mouth piecesMar 08, 2010
By Game Finder "Game Finder"
Excellent for windsucking/cribbers! Much lighter than the metal muzzles and therefore more comfortable for those of us with horses obsessed with wind sucking or cribbing. Easy to attach to halter, and it stays on with the velcro. My previous experience was with the metal muzzle, which was horrifically heavy and the clasps did not stop my horse from trying to rub it off on the fenceline :(

My only complaint is that they do not offer replacement aluminum mouth pieces. My obsessive horse has gone through (2) of them so far by rubbing the aluminum until it broke. Hence replacing the whole thing.

Other than that, I will continue to use as it's light, comfortable, and easy to clean.
