Makes leather soft as newOct 06, 2011
By Andriy Fomenko Bought it after reading all the nice reviews here (still, felt as buying snake-oil)
After I received it, I started from the well-worn boots: good predictable result, proceeded to apply to all shoes in the closet in 15 minutes: mostly good results, but be advised that the shine will actually get dull on some leathers and some will loose some of paint. Leather will generally get a tint darker, but that would not matter for anything but light colors.
Applied it to well-worn leather ottoman, which was receiving some Armor-All before (never again: just read other reviews on the long-term consequences of the use!) - it definitely restored it substantially, but sure enough, you would not expect worn pigment to become new. Overall, good result to compare to Armor-All and Meguire's.
I applied the left-overs of whatever I put in the cup (very little actually) on working leather gloves: made it NICE, but darken the yellow color to honey-color.
Overall:
YES, it softens the leather nicely
NO, it does not bring any bad smell, but more like you are getting this tint of smell from the boot repair shop: just a tint of it
NO, it will not do miracles
YES, it will somewhat improve the look of the surface

Worked great for my project.Jan 19, 2012

Inherited a leather bomber jacket (very distressed) that was almost as stiff as cardboard. The pleats in back were flattened wide open as though they were ironed that way. I soaked and washed jacket in a tub of warm water and hung in the basement for a few days until it dried. Pinned the back pleats closed from inside the jacket with a several clothes pins while it was still wet. When dry, I tumbled jacket in dryer for a bit to warm up the leather and rubbed a moderate amount of this oil into the leather with a rag. The jacket drank it up and became much more pliable. The rear pleats now flex open and closed and the whole jacket is softer and smoother. The color did darken, would guess about halfway between the bone dry and soaking wet shades. I was very pleased with the results. I think this was a cowhide jacket, would be careful using this product on suede or deer hide without testing it first.
After that I tried this on a couple pair of honey colored leather work gloves that were stiff and they also became much more supple. I think one pair was deerhide, but both darkened and became a bit tacky. Was much more generous with the oil on them and may have over applied it.
Overall I think it is very good product for softening leather if used correctly.

Does what it shouldOct 26, 2011
By ddstsm I purchased this after a lot of research. I have a set of 17 year old saddlebags for my harley that have seen better days. After soaking them in water and using saddle soap, I applied several coats of the Neatsfoot oil. The bags are now much softer, and a bit shinier. I'm really happy with how the Neatsfoot oil worked.

By George Rasmussen Neetsfoot Oil is a superior time honored product for preserving and protecting leather items, particularly those in use outdoors like riding gear and boots. I wouldn't be without it and recommend it to everyone who's looking to get the most out of their expensive leather gear while maximizing its life and serviceability.
